Dog treats are a staple of training, bonding, and rewarding good behaviour - but not all treats are created equal. Many popular treats on the market are loaded with additives, artificial flavours, and fillers that offer little nutritional value. Here's how to choose treats that are actually good for your dog.
What makes a treat 'natural'?
A natural dog treat uses real, recognisable ingredients with minimal processing. The ingredient list should be short and easy to understand. Ideally, the primary ingredient is a single named protein - such as beef, chicken, duck, or fish.
Treats labelled 'natural' are not always regulated in the same way as food claims, so it pays to read the label rather than trust the packaging.
Ingredients to avoid
- Artificial preservatives - BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin are chemical preservatives linked to health concerns in dogs. Look for natural preservation with vitamin E (tocopherols) instead.
- Artificial colours and flavours - These add no nutritional value and can cause sensitivities.
- Sugar and salt - Neither belongs in dog treats. High sugar contributes to weight gain and dental problems; excess salt is harmful to kidneys.
- Meat meal or generic 'meat derivatives' - These are low-quality protein sources that can include parts you wouldn't choose to feed your dog.
Ingredients to look for
- Named protein as first ingredient - Beef, chicken, duck, turkey, or fish should lead the list.
- Natural superfoods - Ingredients like kelp, pumpkin seeds, cranberry, and quinoa add vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
- Short ingredient list - Fewer ingredients usually means less processing and fewer additives.
- Made in Ireland or the EU - Provenance matters. Irish-made treats are subject to strict food safety standards.
